I began beadweaving in January 2008 while taking a year to decompress between grad schools, and I've been pretty well hooked ever since! The whole process is exciting, the first sketches or ideas in my brain to beginning to bead, seeing the piece change itself, and getting new ideas for another project.
My background is quite varied - when I was 3 months out from turning 2, my family up and moved to Kenya where I primarily lived until I was 18. I journeyed to the US for my college education, loving every minute of my Geology degree and the elective art classes I was able to take. Grad school part 1 brought me to New Mexico, where I was immediately smitten with the landscape and the weather - sometimes reminiscent of my home in Kenya. I also met and married my husband during that time. Grad school part 2 took us to Indiana where we braved the flat lands and cold, gray winters for two years. Using lots of color in my work helped! We spent 6 months in Sudan working on a water project to fulfill my Master's in Environmental Science degree, and then moved back to New Mexico. I'm currently working as a Hydrogeologist, and bead in my spare time, whatever little that happens to be.
All of my work is original; I've never been good at following patterns. My sources of inspiration are wide. I have made bracelets based on hotel carpet ("Offset Squares"), in the style of traditional East African cloth (Kangas no. 1, 2, and 3), and after geologic thin sections (Thin Section no. 1). My necklaces have been inspired by the state of New Mexico ("Enchantment"), color schemes ("Tangerine and Sea Foam"), or using techniques I stumbled across while trying to other stuff altogether ("Tropical Breeze").
Take a look around, and I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy creating it!
